The letter was franked c. 10 n. 14Dg curiously canceled with oval postmark "Mayor of Montevago", on the front the circle of S. Margherita used as a name and on the reverse transit and arrival postmarks. N.d.R. Reading the text inside the letter it is clear that the deceased and dishonest parish priest of Montevago altered the number of inhabitants of the town in his favor for personal gain. The Mayor had an urgent need to resolve the matter quickly because it was necessary to pay the dues to the deceased. One reads in the answer inside "Pay the congruent just the agreed upon with regard to the number of the population found in the last census. The dead man the parish priest must receive the whole congruous except to render the account." Therefore it is my opinion that given the urgency and delicacy of the matter, the Mayor wanted to affix the postage stamp and its cancellation to make the postal officers understand the urgency and importance of the letter.
